With losses mounting for the heavy bombers of the 8th USAAF in 1943 it was the advent of the 
Fighter Escorts, or as they were more affectionately known, the Little Friends that helped to turn the tide against the enemy by providing a defensive screen for the bombers all the way to the target and home again.
